Feeling rather groggy after a poor night’s sleep, I was trying to make scrambled eggs with eyes half-closed while longing for my cup of coffee. Kiddos were in and out of the kitchen making lunches and just generally getting in the way of the egg-making process. I was minding my own business when through the early-morning haze of my mind I heard an exasperated voice behind me exclaim, “Ah, rats! I missed her!”
Turning around I found my eight-year-old and his faithful rope were laying a snare for my feet. Had he succeeded, he would not have found it amusing had I fallen on top of him.
He tried his best to catch me, but to no avail. Just the smell of my coffee and this challenge from my youngster was making me light on my feet. I decided this was another version of dancing in the kitchen.
The day before, he and his 5-year-old sidekick had been sneakily laying traps with their ropes for their 2-year-old brother. They would lie in wait like those robbers on the road to Jericho for their little brother to come through pushing the baby stroller. I don’t know if he ever got caught, but they sure had fun trying.
This rope can do more than tie up baby brother and catch Mom’s feet. I was told it can even do housework!
I had given the children some cleaning assignments. Unbeknownst to me, the rope had tagged along. When they were done, Terrel asked, “Mom, do you have anymore jobs to do? This rope is good at doing them!”
I may just have to invest in a few more of those ropes when it comes time to clean out the boys’ closet.
We have a railing in the living room so folks don’t fall down the basement stairway and it has this magnificent post on the end. This post is the horse upon which our little cowboys practice their lassoing. (I’m not sure that’s actually a word….) At least in the winter when snow has covered all the tree stumps outside.
We might not have the smell of horseflesh and the breeze of the open meadow, but many a wild stallion has been tamed within the confines of my living room by a little boy and his rope.
