A delicious and simple recipe for making your own apple pie filling to can.
Fall is here with its apples, plums, and hunting season. It is beautiful in its own way. I love that feeling of stepping outside in the morning . . . and taking a deep breath of crisp, cold air.
This fall we have more apples than I know what to do with. And so we are going to show you how to make a simple apple pie filling to stock your canning shelves this winter!
Apple Pie Filling to Can
You don’t have to use this only for pie filling. It is great used as the base for an apple crisp – fast and easy! Top it with a mixture of brown sugar, oats, butter, and pecans. Bake it and then drizzle with caramel ice cream topping. Sounds so good I might make it for dessert tonight!
I like to peel the apples with an apple peeler that suctions to the counter top. You can purchase them at bulk food stores quite often, or on Amazon. In the video, you will see how it works so slick and easy!
Here is a fun video I put together to show you the basic steps!
And now for the recipe. One of the ingredients is regular Clear Jell. This is a thickener that canned fruit or salsa recipes call for often. You can sometimes purchase it at a bulk food store – or on Amazon. If you do much canning, it might be a good idea to get this in bulk. For this recipe, you want the regular Clear Jell, not the instant type.
Apple Pie Filling (Canned)
Ingredients
- 10 cups water
- 1 cup regular Clear Jell thickener
- 4 1/2 cups sugar
- 3 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 tbsp lemon juice
- 28 cups apples peeled, chopped
Instructions
-
Mix together all ingredients, except apples, in large pot. Bring to a boil.
-
Fill jars with peeled, chopped apples.
-
Pour syrup over apples in the jars. Allow time for the syrup to fill all cracks between the apples.
-
Wipe off rims of jars and top with lids and rings. Can in waterbath canner for 20 minutes.
Recipe Notes
Clear Jell is a thickener that can be found in most bulk food stores or on Amazon. Be sure to get the regular (cooking) type, not the instant Clear Jell.

The pie filling looks very good. Seems easy to make. Also I made the biscuits for Sundays lunch. Only thing wrong with them I got them a little to thin. Will do them again. Tues. past I made the Snickerdoodle Bars. They were great!!Took them to a church function, and did not bring any home. I did have a problem with them baking out of the pan, Have any advice?? Will make them again..Ten stars on them:) Thanks for all..

Yes, I know what you mean about the snickerdoodle bars! You can also bake them in two 9×13’s. But I am usually too lazy to grab two pans. 😉

I love canning apple pie filling! It was the first thing I ever learned to can. I just canned a small batch (3 quarts) on Wednesday and can’t wait to can more in the next few weeks. It’s such a great thing to have in the pantry for quick desserts. Thanks for sharing your recipe, yours is actually my favorite version (the ratios are good!) so I’m bookmarking it 🙂

Awesome!! I am glad you have been having fun canning also. 😉 I personally love the smell of apples in my kitchen! Seems so fallish….

Kendra I just canned 130 qt of apple pie filling last wk!
I use it in pies, apple crisp, and oatmeal. For the oatmeal, I put a jar on the bottom of a 9×13 dish, then mix up my baked oatmeal recipe, and pour over top, bake! It is a hit here at our house!:)
Also I use a recipe that takes instant clear jel, takes a step out of the process!:) mix dry ingredients then add water mix add apples fill jars and can 25 min!:) just fun! Tina
