As a summer project, our boys adopted the art of tying fishing flies. They read a few books from the library, watched some youtube clips on fly-tying, and voila . . . they took off!
What has been interesting was their quest to find hair for their flies. One day I was missing my good kitchen scissors. After some detective work, I discovered Logan in the chicken coop – snipping feathers off of my poor rooster!
Daddy wasn’t too bothered by it all, but I asked them to please leave a few feathers on my chickens. I truly would like some eggs someday – and I guarantee any chicken will lay eggs better if it is not being de-feathered at the same time!
So trying to be a sweet mom every once in a while, I even donated a few strands of my hair to the project. However, I was informed mine were not the right color and they got promptly spray painted. Oh well, maybe it’ll at least save my chickens!

Logan’s fly.
All three boys entered one (or more) of their tied flies in the county fair this past month. And they all three won a ribbon!
Of course, we should probably mention that they were the only three to enter flies into the fair – yes, we have a small county! But they – and Mom – were mighty proud of those ribbons.

Reaping the Rewards
Derek tried out his fly fishing rod this past weekend when we went camping on the Yaak River in Montana. And was thrilled to catch a few fish!
I love the beauty of the line soaring through the air!
On that bright orange line hang a young boy’s hopes and dreams . . .

I had to chuckle about them being the only three to enter….but even so I was impressed. Great job boys:D Maybe someday they can make some extra money doing that.
