Dear Walmart……
You had no idea what was headed your way yesterday. Had you known, you might have locked your doors. Or at the very least, put extra security on the premises. Five kids and a mom armed with her iced coffee is enough to scare the restroom janitor, the cashier, the manager, and perhaps even the CEO. I don’t know…we never found him.
Dear elderly gentleman in the grocery aisle…..
Pardon us as we move our caravan past your little cart. And please don’t stare at me that way. Having five kids in tow does not mean I’ve completely lost my mind. It just means I’m still looking for it.
Dear man in the milk department….
I know we must look daft, calling out prices and jotting them down. But we are doing a little research project comparing prices in various shopping locations. (Thanks for the idea, Jan.) It’s amazing how good my 9 year old can be pushing the cart and writing down numbers as I throw them at him. Someone taught that kid to multitask!
Dear ladies in the restroom….
You’ll have to excuse my baby that crawled underneath the stall door. He’s learning all kinds of escape tactics, but down on the walmart bathroom floor is one of the grossest he’s come up with.
Dear cashier…..
Thank you for not groaning as you saw “the tribe” headed your way, armed with all their school supplies and treasures that money from their piggy bank could buy. You were kind and you’ll never know how much that helps a mom out!
And lastly…..dear fellow mom in the school supply department….
Forgive me if I look a little sad, for that is what I am. My baby girl who came to us just 6 1/2 short years ago is leaving me. Yes, I know it’s only to first grade, but she’s my one and only girl and so very special. The strings that attach her to me are starting to be snipped, one by one, until at last one day she’ll fly free. But for now I don’t want to let her go and so I cover up my sadness by helping her pick out her pink lunchbox and puppy backpack. Next come the crayons, the ruler, pencils, glue, and folder. Now she’s all set and grinning hugely while my heart is breaking….
Then I feel a little hand in mine and take a deep breath. I’ll be okay.

You have a gift in writing:)You should write a book, who knows maybe you started 1 already. But this made me laugh n also could feel your sadness. That is what makes great writers when you can feel what the person is writing…Wishing you the best on her 1st day.

😀 It’s bittersweet to snip those strings, isn’t it…
I am down to just one child at home and am looking forward to not needing to write letters such as these, as it would be a too-common occurance… 🙂
