I made a shocking discovery last week.
I am grey.
Really grey.
In fact, I was in denial . . . until I had sat huddled in front of the big bathroom mirror for a good number of minutes. I even went so far as to dig out my hand mirror to view this atrocity from different angles. Surely a different angle would reveal it was a bunch of blonde streaks I was seeing!
I couldn’t convince myself this was true, however. So when Lowell got home I asked him if he had seen it. Do you want to know what he did? He very kindly and sympathetically smiled at me – and nodded yes.
Oh sob.
Looks like it’s time for me to grow up. Either gracefully – or pitching a fit. I will choose gracefully. In fact, my new motto is this: each new grey hair takes me that much closer to seeing my Jesus.
And this discovery came as I was working on putting together a presentation for a ladies retreat I am scheduled to speak at next year. In this presentation, I wanted to have some pictures of my growing up years . . . and so here is memory lane for you. Back when I was young . . .
Coryna. Kendra. Krista.
(although in this picture, Coryna is on the right – yet the oldest)
I am the middle. Always the middle.
We were like peas in a pod!
Maybe this ride was so frightening it got erased from my memory – because I really don’t remember it!
But what a cute driver . . .
I am sorry to disappoint you all . . . but I highly doubt we smiled the whole time we did the dishes.
I had such a happy childhood in sunny California.
Awesome siblings. Awesome parents.
I still think they are great!
My senior picture.
There are four things I remember about this picture:
- That dress was one of my favorites. Made me feel skinny in it!
- My orthodontist gallantly took the braces off of my front teeth – just for my senior picture. Do they still do that today?
- The photographer popped the lenses out of my glasses to prevent glare.
- That poof! Any other gals remember ratting your poofs so they would get higher? Wow, those were the days.
As you look at this picture, please remember that we were married in the last century. Just barely. 1999! So it was before digital cameras were very popular. That should explain why the picture quality is not real great.
We were still so young here. Back before there was grey on either of us. Back before six kids. Back before the big move West.
Yet one thing has stayed – we still very much love each other!
God has indeed been good to me.
And so I will do my best to pass His goodness on to those around me.

Kendra, I’m going grey with you and I feel your pain 🙂
Did you ever try the Bulk Herb Store’s herbal hair treatment? I’ve heard from older friends that it works very well at taming grey hairs and conditioning plus reviving your colored non-grey hairs.
Kendra says
I’ve never heard of it! Thanks for the heads up!

I very much enjoyed your walk down memory lane. My mother always said that she earned every one of her gray hairs by raising us four kids…and my oldest brother gave her 95% of them! I now have lots and lots of gray streaks. A friend who is a hairdresser gave me a sweet compliment. She said she has ladies pay her a lot of money to hair hair that is “highlighted” like mine. Since mine is covered most of the time, only my husband knows just how gray it is!
Blessings,
Betsy

Yes, I have heard that grey hair is a trend now! Good thing. 😉

I found two LONG gray hairs IN MY EYEBROW! I plucked them quickly. I’m only 33! Lol. Loved the pics growing up. And no I don’t think orthodontists remove the braces anymore for your picture. I can’t believe the photographer took your lenses out! Glasses are made so tight now that it would be either impossible to do it or impossible to put them back!

Yeah, this was about 20 years ago!! Maybe that explains the lens thing. I sure didn’t expect them to do that, but that is one of the first things I think of when I see this picture! Isn’t that crazy?

Gray hair is a sign of living long enough to have gained some wisdom. 🙂 I also remind my children I earned every one of them, due to raising them! I came across this quote about a year ago, “Do not regret growing older, It’s a privilege denied to many!”
Life keeps marching along at a swift rate of speed, we are making so many memories as we go!
Blessings! Our family love to read your writings, and the pictures, are special too!

I absolutely love that quote!! Thank you so much. It helps to see aging from God’s perspective!
