Kendra has asked me to make a few comments periodically for her “Grandma’s Column”—on Childrearing and\or Housekeeping. They will be brief as I certainly don’t have all the answers. Today I have a few “keys on raising children to be God-fearing”, which we endeavored to apply in our home, but know we fell short many times. In the future I may address each separately and more in-depth. I’ve had this list on the inside cover of my Bible for years.
Teach:
1.) No lying—no matter the consequences.
2.) Dress and act modestly.
3.) Respect elders and others.
4.) Obedience on “first call”
Have:
5.) Family worship daily.
6.) Open communication with children.
Do:
7.) Homeschool or use dedicated Church school.
8.) Faithfully attend church services, church revivals and conferences—with your children.
9.) Parents maintain strong Biblical convictions and teach them to your children.
10.) Parents spend time in prayer.
11.) No double standards.
12.) Discipline with love and prayer.
These children are precious; God gives us only one chance to raise them!

Thank you, Mom, for these keys! I can testify to the “no lying” rule. To this day, I can distinctly remember exactly where I was when I lied to you about eating my sandwich so that I could have my piece of chocolate cake. 🙂 I still use that as an example to my kids that lying never pays! I didn’t enjoy that piece of chocolate cake . . .
