Favicon? Is this French for cheesecake??
Don’t I wish.
If you’re like me, this was a neat little word that I would turn up my nose at, thinking it was for those computer geeky people who know everything computer-wise frontwards and backwards and all the lingo that goes with it. But I speak English and the word “favicon” did nothing for me.
Until I knew what it was.
A favicon is your unique branding on your own website. They are circled in red below.
And they are simple as pie to make and install. You know, “pie” might not be the best word for me, considering my past experience with pies.
To begin with, you will need to go somewhere like Picmonkey.com. They do not have their collage option available yet, so I will just show you the easy way to make a favicon using a picture. Sometime later, we can show you how to do it using a collage and simple letters that go with your website. I’ve tried Photobucket and Fotoflexer, but I think Picmonkey will be the easiest once it’s available.
1. Upload your picture.
2. Next crop it to a smaller square, including in the picture the item/person you most want seen.
3. Now resize your picture to 16 x 16. This is very small, but it fits way up there on the corner of your tab to tell people that they are on the right website!
4. Save your cute, little picture by clicking the “Save” button down on the bottom left.
5. Now go into your Blogger layout. See that little favicon button on the top left? Click edit and choose the picture you saved from Picmonkey.
6. Once it’s uploaded, click Save. That’s all there is to it.
Sometimes it takes a while for your favicon to show up on your website. Blogger is slow to get used to the idea that “Hey, this little Mennonite housewife changed her favicon on me!”
Hang in there. Blogger will finally catch on. If not, re-upload it and see what happens.

If you are in WordPress, it is more difficult to upload a favicon. But it is doable.
You must have access to your file manager. And if you are using a Genesis WordPress theme, it is even more difficult. Yet it can be done.
For some really great tutorials on how to install a favicon using WordPress, I’ll send you over to an excellent blog “Blogging with Amy.” She has a guide on how to access your file manager and upload files to it, how to make and install a favicon on WordPress, and also how to install a favicon using Genesis WordPress theme.
If you are still having trouble, email me and I’ll help you.
Have fun!! 🙂
