I get really irritated when something else invades my kitchen.
My kitchen is my domain. I’d like to think it’s a gourmet cafe, but the honest truth is that it’s more of a test lab. Either way it’s still mine . . . until the fruit flies take over.
So I decided this year to find a way to kill them.
I’d found several ideas on Pinterest that showed how to make your own fruit fly trap. Last year I’d tried a similar one that didn’t work. But I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try.
It requires a glass jar or bowl, apple cider vinegar, water, dish soap . . . and a special ingredient.
Now this special ingredient was made up all by my blonde self. I noticed how the fruit flies loved to sit on the top of my three-year-old’s sippy cup lid. And this sippy cup was usually filled with diluted apple juice. The flies loved to congregate right where it was sticky.
I decided to apply this little ingredient to my fruit fly trap. And it worked!!
I filled my jar with:
- half vinegar
- a little water
- one squirt dish soap
- small amount of apple juice
Then I dipped my finger in the liquid and wiped it all around the rim of the jar. This seemed to attract the flies even more!
The picture is my first attempt and we lost count of how many flies it caught. I left this jar sitting on my counter to make myself feel like I was really accomplishing something. I loved looking at all those dead flies!
And it kept catching flies and more flies.
Finally I decided it was time to have a funeral and dumped them down the drain. Then we started all over again.
Within ten minutes of refilling the jar, we’d caught about six flies!
Now chances are, this won’t work for somebody out there, but it sure worked for us!
