Mennonite Mom is a wonderful Etsy shop for those who either do not know how to sew or would rather be doing something else! She sells everything from head veilings to jackets and blazers. Dresses for big and little girls as well as women. Cape dresses, or no capes. And she even has a maternity section.
I asked Jane, owner of Mennonite Mom, to write a little bio for me about her business and how it started.
My name is mennonitemom, and I am so glad to meet you through “Living in the Shoe”.
Last year I began a journey of selling affordable, plain and modest clothing to families across the US. My heart has been blessed by the many friendships that I have made through my stores. Across the US, there are folks who are turning to a plain and modest lifestyle.
What does the word “modest” mean? This is a question that each of us may answer just a little differently.
I like what one person told me that modesty means the 3 L’s:
- Loose
- Layered
- Long
We will not always agree on the exact same style of dress. However, we do have the same Father, who is always faithful to help us understand His Word and to apply it to our everyday lives.
Etsy isn’t the only place where she sells modest clothing, she’s also got many listings on Ebay. Currently, she is selling 2 sets of baskets that were made by her widow friend, from which the sales support her and her family of 6.
In addition to her other items on Ebay is one hammock, from which the sales support Mennonite Air Missions in Guatemala.
Mennonite Mom is offering a promotion code to the readers of Living in the Shoe for 10% off any Etsy order. This coupon code is good until November 30. Just enter promo code livinginashoe at checkout for your 10% off.
And Mennonite Mom is also on Pinterest for those of you who want to check out or follow her great pins.

I would like to order ten dresses for students at a deaf school in Belize. It is a Mennonite school. We work light construction there each February through a family missions trip. I am working on getting sizes. They probably range in size from a size 8 in girls to a medium in women’s. Can you let me know if you think you can do this. We have teams going in May and August. We are in Alabama. Thank you!!
Living in the Shoe says

Hi there, I am 16 and I have been attending a mennonite church with my neighbors for the past year and a half now. None of my family is in the church with me, my mom is christian but my dad is not, but they are okay with me going. Anyway I want to try and join and be baptised but i’m nervous because i’m don’t know what it will be like. all the people cover their heads, the covering looks like this: http://www.quakerjane.com/images/plain_dress/caps/beachy-left.jpg
will i have to wear this covering? also will i need to wear their dresses? the other adults in the church have been telling I should become a member but I’m not sure if they’d take me since I’d be the only one in my family. i also don’t know what school will be like if I’m a member, will people make fun of me?
I asked someone in the church what I’d have to do and she said something like “well as you know we have dress standards for members of the church and we dress modestly and keep our heads covered”, she didn’t exactly say whether I’d have to dress that way or not. Maybe I will and she just assumed i knew that, I don’t know.
i was thinking of asking soon so id love it if you can answer me soon! thanks…

Thank you for your question! I am encouraged by your desire to please God and follow what He says. I would highly recommend you find somebody in the church you are planning to join who can answer your questions more specifically. Most Anabaptist churches will ask that you dress in the code they have and cover your head like they do, however. But each church is different in what standards they ask you to uphold, so you really need to have someone you can talk with there locally — perhaps a minister or deacon’s wife. As for them accepting you alone, with no family in the church, I don’t see why they would not accept you – especially since they are encouraging you to join! If you are unsure of anything they believe, PLEASE ask them! That is what they are there for – to help younger people on their journey of faith and to show from the Scriptures verses to support the way they believe. May God richly bless you!!
someone in eastern usa says
okay, i will talk to them! I just was wondering, for example, if they’d grant me an exception to part of the code if I join so that I don’t have to wear a cape dress to school. Would they let me do that do you think?
Kendra says
Probably not, but you’d have to ask them! 😉 Praying God will give you strength and grace!!
someone in eastern usa says
so then how should I handle the transition from my clothes now to a cape dress?
Kendra says
It is possible someone in the church there could sew some dresses for you – or at least teach you how! 🙂 It’s not as hard as it looks. I would just sit down and have a good talk with them — they will help you!
