Almost thirteen years ago, I vowed to love and respect my husband. Within mere hours following the ceremony, a map was placed in my hands. As his sidekick, I also became his co-pilot.
On our honeymoon to Canada, we got lost. And I was the one holding the map.
But quite honestly, it wasn’t our fault. I love my Canadian friends, but for some reason they have a different kind of sign system. At least in Toronto. And we could not seem to follow it.
But since then, the map continues to be my domain when we travel for any length of time. It’s almost considered a hobby of mine – this map-reading stuff. I love it!
Lowell and I have gotten so good at our little system that sometimes I don’t even have to speak. We have hand motions for turning right, left, straight, up, and over. I was getting rather confident in my abilities as the map-reader, co-pilot, and hand-signaler.
Until Miss ‘Droid with a GPS came along.
If there is one thing that irritates me more than anything else, it is another woman telling my husband where to go, which way to turn, how much longer it will be ………. and especially, if he goofed up and “please turn around”.
That’s my job.
The nasty part is….she does a good job. But why in the world don’t they make it a man’s voice? My husband has taken pity on me and at least mutes her.
Just very recently, as in yesterday, I felt my confidence returning. We were trying to find a Chinese restaurant and so he asked the Android phone to locate some for us. Several popped up and he chose one and proceeded to follow its instructions.
Then Miss ‘Droid lost service. Her satellite went haywire, her map was upside-down or something.
But I couldn’t keep the cheesy smile off my face.
I never lose service and my satellite is always intact, thank you very much. If my map is upside-down, I at least have the sense to do a 180 before my husband glances over.
Finally her service is back after her little coffee and donuts break, and another Chinese restaurant is chosen. This time we actually find the place…….and realize it was exactly where we had started from.
Plus, it’s not a true Chinese. They mentioned egg rolls on the menu, but served mostly sandwiches. With horseradish.
There’s that huge grin again.
