It is pretty much a given fact that if you come to my house . . . you might appear on my blog somewhere. I guess our friends don’t mind it because I haven’t seen them running away!
On Saturday, a friend took us up into the mountains to go mushroom hunting. We found more than we ever had before! In fact, the kids wanted to count them when we came home, but only Logan got around to counting his bag of mushrooms. He started to count and almost began to panic when he was nearing 200 in his Walmart bagful. He ended up with 189 mushrooms that he picked all by himself! This wasn’t counting Dad’s mushrooms – he always gets the most.
Dallas was the “official mushroom stomper”. He and I meandered around, trying to look like we were finding something. We found lots of snails. Hey, they should count for something!
Lowell took a look at all the bags of mushrooms, and did an educated guess from what Logan had counted . . . and came up with somewhere around 600 mushrooms!! Ugh. That’s alot of frying.
So we decided to have some friends to come help us fry and eat them. You have to choose the right friends for a mushroom fry: you want those who will still like you even if you make them sick.
We dip (or shake) our morels in beaten egg first. Of course, this is after we have cleaned them and sliced them in half. The kids got that job as soon as they arrived home from school that day! It took a long time to clean several hundred mushrooms.
Then we mix up a breading that goes like this:
- 2 cups flour
- 4 teaspoons Johnny’s seasoning (this is an all-purpose like Lawry’s)
- 2 teaspoons black pepper
Shake the mushrooms in a container with this breading to coat them. However, we had to make up several batches of this breading to cover the hundreds we fried. I think this breading recipe should be enough for around 25 whole mushrooms.
Then fry them in hot oil until crispy!
A batch all fried up and ready to be consumed!
We began the evening with five good cookie sheets full of cleaned mushrooms. And we still didn’t get them all eaten.
The kids loved the mushrooms! They would probably eat fried morels every night for a week if we would make them.
We also had several sweet babies there . . . and they snoozed in the shade while we munched supper. There are so many babies that have been born here recently – that I am loving it! It’s like a baby smorgasboard everywhere I go. I can hold fat ones, squishy ones, slobbery ones, and giggly ones. And when they cry . . . I hand them back.
Makes the grandma stage of life look very inviting!
And we roasted hot dogs for those of us who needed something besides mushrooms for supper.
It was a beautiful evening with friends, a campfire, yummy food . . . and green grass. Yes, I just had to mention the green grass because I have waited so many months for it to appear again. And I am loving it!!
Have a great week!

Looks like a lovely time everyone had! I have never had breaded morels before. I found one morel out in our yard, and I need to go looking for more. 🙂
