This morning started off exceptionally well.
The Statue of Liberty emptied my dishwasher for me.
Or so I was told this spectacle was supposed to be . . .
We took the kids to Newport to do some exploring around there. We started out at the Hatfield Science Center. Since we arrived early, we went on their nature walk and found a couple shrimp in the mud flats. That was really neat for these mountain folks!
For lunch, we made a much-needed stop at a pizza place for lunch.
I honestly cannot come up with a word good enough for the expression on his face . . . “ornery” doesn’t even begin to come close.
Then we took off for the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. The last time we were here was when Wyatt was six months old – five years ago.
It was cold and windy at the lighthouse, but warmer down by the tidepools.
Yaquina Head Lighthouse
Isn’t our God magnificent?!
We found one of these little critters in the rocks . . . upon which we were sitting.
In response to the last post, some of you said you could almost smell and hear the ocean – or something like that.
Well, I have a treat for you. It is the sight and the sound of the ocean, but you’ll have to do without the smell!
Arriving back at the house, we put some of us to bed for naps . . . and the rest of us hit the beach. Derek found this little guy in the water. Cute, ain’t he?
Terrel and Logan were my magnificent helpers for our second sand castle.
Let me rephrase that.
Terrel actually helped. Logan mostly asked questions and critiqued our technique. Then when I began talking about silver knights on white steeds parading up to the palace to rescue the princess . . . . he had to know what a steed was.
You can imagine where the conversation went from there . . .
I’m going to tell you a secret that I wasn’t ever sure I’d be able to tell.
I love having older kids! They are so much fun that they make me feel like I’m ten again.
I call it “being young at heart”.
The truth might be that it’s a midlife crisis . . . but I’m not letting my mind get close to that thought.
Once our sandcastle was all completed, we held hands and crashed it. Figured the very strong wind was going to get it anyway – so why should the wind have all the fun?!
Then it was time for showers, supper and a couple games of scum.
See you all tomorrow!

I, too, enjoyed our children much more when they got older. You no longer had to wipe their behinds or their noses but they liked fun and went for it. You could have serious conversations, sensitble ones…yes, I loved older children better and now that they are adults it is more fun, yet.

Thank you for the video! I have been missing the coast so much. Our children loved the tidepools there too. So much fun for all of you. And yes, it IS fun as they get older.
Blessings,
Betsy
