Our family back east was asking for pictures of the home we will be moving into, Lord willing. So since we took pictures to show them, I thought I’d post them on the blog – especially since you will probably be hearing about such things as the chicken coop, big red barn, and – oh heavenly sunshine – the fruit orchard!
This is the property as seen from down the road. It shows where everything sits on the property. We will have 2.2 acres here for us to spread out and roam around. Plus a big field behind us with woods farther back.
The front of the house. It is an older home with four bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, and a full basement. The children are already fighting over who gets what bedroom!
If it gets really quiet around here, this is where I’ll be. The fruit orchard!
I have always wanted a fruit orchard and it looks like I’ll finally have one to play in – at least for the time we rent this place. We were told there are a couple sour cherry trees, a couple plum trees, and some apple trees. I’m an amateur fruit gardener, so would love any advice! Is it hard to kill fruit trees? Guess I’ll find out.
I can already see the four hanging baskets that will go between those porch posts. Behind them will go the wicker porch set I’d love to have! I’ll even serve you iced tea when you come. It sure is fun to dream!
Here is the layout of the property while sitting in the driveway. The big red barn is filled with hay at the moment. The little shop to the left is where Lowell plans to hang out. And the house has a carport that we can just squeeze our two vehicles into.
Every kids’ dream. A huge red barn for exploring! Our kids were extremely disappointed that they didn’t get to dissect the thing while we were looking at the place. But I’m sure there will be lots of time for that this summer.
If it gets quiet around here, and you can’t find me in the fruit orchard, you might try the chicken coop. (at least I think it’s a chicken coop – please tell me it’s a chicken coop) I love this little thing! I already have plans to doll it up with flowers and maybe even a wooden trough of mint alongside it.
Will I put chickens in it? Maybe. I’d really like to. But, like fruit gardening, I know basically nothing about chickens. Seriously, though, how hard can it be? Throw a few chickens in there, feed them a little, and they hand you their eggs out the door.
Ok, so maybe it’s a little harder than that. But even if nothing live goes inside the coop, the kids will have fun playing in it and I’ll have fun on the outside.
And once spring comes, along with summer right behind it, we’ll show you what it looks like under all the snow!

haha. Thank you Di for the laugh.
One of these days, I hope to get some chickens… I know I’d like the cute little chicks, in any case.

That chicken coop might be a glorified outhouse! 🙂 I would def turn it into a coop though!

Looks like fun! And if that isn’t a chicken coop, it can become one in short order! Chickens are a great family experience – you should try it. Warning though, chickens are addicting and so are their eggs. My kids are full on egg snobs now. If it isn’t home grown, they don’t want it!

Thanks, Rebecca! I might have to call you up for advice sometime – IF we get chickens. The kids would love it and I would to – especially since we can eat 5-6 dozen per week. 😛

So glad for you guys! You could probably figure out pretty soon if its a chicken coop by taking a look inside 🙂 Chickens are pretty messy!

Thanks, everyone!! We’re very excited – understatement of the year. 🙂 Lorraine, our house is one a rent-to-own, with it going on the market in one year. It’s some good GB folks who are renting it.

I can just see the baskets of flowers hanging from the porch.

Congratulations on your new home! Just found your blog last month and really enjoy it. Ordered your book and it arrived on Feb. 1 our daughters 2nd birthday. Couldn’t put it down and managed to read it that day :). Mom’s really should be allowed to read in places other than the bathroom … LOL!!!
Things we have found about chickens: Their eggs are delicious! No two people will give you the same information on them! There are good chickens and bad chickens 🙂 we ended up with the ones that like our neighbors yard better and will even venture over to the store too :(. They are great family fun though and it is really cute to watch the little ones call them and watch the chickens follow them. Ours have mostly come to the end of their laying days and we are thinking of getting more (hoping to get the good chicken variety :)) this spring. So chickens are an adventure that I am sure you will have fun with! They make for great stories and the eggs are what keeps them out of our freezer :).

Oh, another lady that I can ask advice from! Just curious, do you make it a point to find non-GMO chicks? We had someone tell us that the chicks most people order are GMO. Is this something you’ve come up against?
