In case you haven’t noticed lately, I’m having fun with a new little helper I’ve found online – called Google Documents. This is where I’ve been drawing up the menus, checklists, and printables recently. It’s been fun since I like to make lists for myself! Once I realized how easy Google Docs was to use, I got the brainy idea to share my printables with you all.
Ok. So maybe it wasn’t exactly “brainy”, but it did come straight out of my own blonde head – which I’m told by my children on occasion has only a few marbles left in it! They say it sweetly of course. 🙂
Anyhow, as I’ve mentioned on here previously, I am about two months into my term as teacher of a woman’s Sunday School class here in our home church. We’ve been working our way through Philippians and are just at the beginning of Colossians now. As I was preparing myself to teach, I got some really good advice from my wise sage of a husband! This was his advice.
Forget the way everyone else teaches. Teach it your way.
Um. That was pretty profound. Still it took him saying it a couple times before I really wrapped my mind around it. Yeah, I can be rather thick-skulled on some things. He is so good for me!!
So once it penetrated my hard head, I decided that there was no way I wanted to dread each Sunday morning from 10:30-11:00. And if it took me doing something a little different, so be it. I told Lowell that if there was one thing I wanted by the end of my term, it was to say that I really and truly enjoyed it!
Now I love studying. And so I thought “why not print up my own questions to help not only myself in my studying, but to hand out to my class”? That way they can sort of be forewarned about where my blonde brain will be headed next Sunday!
Sample of the study questions:

And I’ll have to say it suits me. It’s not the way some folks might teach, but it sure makes it more enjoyable for me! I don’t do well by teaching adult people without a little guidance. Now give me a whole classroom full of kids and I’m loving it! Kids don’t care if I stumble over the words or my ears turn red when I can’t think of the answer. 🙂 But adults intimidate me just a wee bit. Ok, they can a whole lot. So this was my anti-intimidation tactic!
If you’re at all interested in these questions on the book of Philippians,
you’re welcome to view, print, or download them here.

I have divided them up into the sections like we studied them per Sunday. And, truthfully, we never got to the end of our lesson! Yeah, the ladies in my class are really great like that. I will also give you the link to the book of Colossians once we have completed it, and any others we study after that.
Thanks for hanging in there with me on this rabbit-trail of a post! I agree that was alot of words just to give you one link.
God bless.

I have enjoyed teaching SS classes, both juniors and adults. Yes, each requires a different approach but at the heart there is a principle which the LORD himself taught me.
One day I was stumped – how am I going to teach THIS lesson? – we were in the book of Romans, then. Then the Holy Spirit so quietly said, “what does this lesson teach about God?” “Oh,” I thought, “that is easy.” And it is. If you approach the WORD as it being God’s means to teach you something about himself, it is easy. After you exhaust it then you ask, “what impact will this have on my life?”
In hindsight I could see how my best teachers used this method in teaching character studies at Bible School.
God bless and may this year be a time of you growing in your love for the LORD and his written WORD.

I love and appreciate those thoughts! Sounds like you’d be a good teacher to sit under. 🙂 I do know this: that whatever my class gets from it . . . I get more. It seems like the more I study, the closer I grow to Him. And my ladies teach me so much! They’re alot of fun.
Thank you, Sandra!

Brian almost always used that method when he taught at our old church…handed out questions the week before on the passage we would be studying. It really led to some good discussions. I miss the ladies’ class right now…wish I could hear you teach 🙂

Truth is, they teach me. 😉 I mostly lead out and ask questions!

It’s a good idea to teach your own way. Rudy likes to draw things on the board, others hand out questions, some indirectly address the topic in a unique way, but they are all good and we learn from each method.

I enjoyed Rudy’s class when I was out there in June!

When being lead by the Holy Spirit, teaching it your way is teaching it His way. I am sure you are making a difference in the lives of those kids. God will bless all your sincere efforts.
