Silence.
Then the sound of a stone being rolled away shattered that silence into a million pieces as the earth shook and trembled. There would never be another silence like that again.
This Savior. Man could not quiet Him. The devil could not defeat Him. Sin had no hold on Him. The grave could not contain Him.
It had never been done before. It has never happened since.
There is One, and only One, for whom my heart longs. There is only One for whom I will bend the knee. There is only One who saved this condemned soul of mine.
There is only One for whom I will sing.

I was cold. Probably shivering. But I’m not sure I even noticed.
Then the sun’s first rays slanted over the horizon on as I stood facing the east with the rest of the singers. We were just a little Dunkard Brethren church in the middle of the Central Valley of California. I was just a little preacher’s kid with a new faith, but a fervent love for my Jesus that was growing.
And I will never forget those Easter morning services that began when it was still dark. We would bundle up since even California can be a little cool at 6 am! Mothers and fathers put in a huge sacrifice to get their children up before dawn to go sing of the empty tomb.
I was oblivious to all the sacrifices made by the adults. As a young teenager, I was simply excited to be singing with the Brethren Heritage Singers on Easter morning. Plus, I was probably wearing a brand-new Easter dress!
Those memories will forever be embedded in my heart. I can still remember singing “Hallelujah For the Blood” and “Hallelujah Chorus”.
Songs of my redemption.
Songs of my Savior.
Songs of the hope and power of the rugged cross and the empty tomb.
Even though it’s been twenty years since those days, it is still my song today. And soon after this little post gets published, I will be singing yet again – Lord willing. Lowell and I joined our youth chorus here at our church in Idaho. We have been enjoying it immensely! And Easter morning we plan to sing a few songs for our early church service.
Those songs of long ago will never lose their meaning.
The blood still cleanses.
The sinners still come.
The tomb is still empty.
The song will go on.
