School mornings are a whirlwind of sorts by the time we get 8 people with eyes open, clothed, and fed. Then to get 6 of them out the door with lunches in hand.
Somewhere in this whirlwind a little voice begins to yell, “Mom, I need dressed!” Oh yes. One got missed in the “getting clothed” part of the morning.
So off to the bedroom we trot. Actually, I shuffle because my coffee is still trying to hit the bottom of my stomach . . . and he sometimes rides his little tyke bike with awesome training wheels. He has no idea how his big brothers thought they were speeding race cars on that very same hot rod bike – years ago.
But there we meet by the little drawers of shirts and pants . . . he off of his bicycle and me all done with shuffling. This is our time to connect in the midst of big kids and big bodies and loud voices. Before the day, the laundry, and the cooking take over.
Sometimes he has an ouie that we sympathize over or put a bandaid on. Sometimes he has a tall tale that simply must be heard by someone or a song he learned that needs an audience.
But always we take a few moments to touch noses and snuggle. Soft cheeks and sometimes snotty noses . . but Mama doesn’t care. Because someday he will be able to dress himself completely and Mama’s hugs will be rather embarrassing.
And my hearts sighs.
But soon the racing bike calls louder than sweet hugs . . . and he speeds away. The whirlwind picks back up as a big kid drives us to school . . .
and I remember the time when the big kid behind the wheel
had been in 3T pants on a little tyke bike.

Know the feelings! First you think you never want to be without a 1 yr old in the house… then he turns 2 and you think that you were all wrong, it is a 2 yr old you never want to do without… then he turns 3 and is potty trained and guess what! You find out you were ALL wrong! 3 yr olds are the best! 🙂 Then the next child comes along and you start a new cycle … Its amazing how God makes each child in the world so special, no matter how big they grow!
My 3yr old was couldn’t decide this morning if riding without training wheels or popping wheelies comes first so he tried to do both at the same time. I laughed and laughed watching him wobble all over, barely staying upright, popping a little wheelie, a couple huge wobbles and then crashtime… and then 1/2 crying over scraped hands while triumphantly crowing” MOM! did you see my Wheelie!” Children are a blessing!

Oh I love this!! You described it perfectly! I have loved every stage – even thought the twos were great and so sweet . . . now I have some awesome adolescents and teenagers. Yes, children are incredibly special and unique!
