Last evening, I had a very handsome man ask me out on a date. He made all the arrangements himself, except for calling my father first. I suppose after 12 1/2 years of marriage, we are beyond that point in our relationship. Let’s hope so, since his “arranging” included finding a babysitter for our five children.
I don’t get very many date nights with my best friend, but when we do, they are very special. This one was so special, he almost forgot to feed me. Of course, I had already insisted that the local fast food hamburger joint would not be acceptable for our date night. I’m not a terribly picky person, especially considering our first date was in a tractor; however, after 10 years of eating McDonald’s cheeseburgers, one needs to have a little variety to brighten the taste buds.
We had needed a few things at the grocery store and so headed there first. Yes, I know this also isn’t very romantic, but necessity sometimes wins out over romance. Leaving the grocery store, we were driving along and I could tell my date’s mind was somewhere else when he almost missed our turn to take me to my food. But a few quick hand motions and squeaks from the passenger’s side and we safely made it to the restaurant without side-swiping anyone.
Once there, we were seated and my handsome man even went so far as to procure a candle for our little table. All I needed was a tiara and I would’ve been queen of the world . . . okay, make that queen of my french dip sandwich.
Instead, I know I’m queen of my man’s heart. He’s been my best friend for almost 14 years now and I can finish his sentences while he reads my mind. Or tries to . . . it is a rather daunting prospect to read a blonde’s mind. He’s stuck with me through thick and thin . . . all the times I’ve been very thick with child, and all the times he’s been thin on clean laundry.
We’ve had an exciting enough life so far that sometimes the idea that it could get even more exciting can send me into tremors. My heart can only take so much before going kapoof! But at least I can say with utmost certainty that I know I will never die of boredom.
I love my best friend and know that life ahead may be rough and tough, but it will also be filled with laughter. Lord willing, we will someday reach a ripe, old age and still be going out on special dates. It might prove a bit more tricky to maneuver his walker with my cane, but at least our speed will have slowed down to where he won’t miss the turn to take me to my food!
