From a father to his son: “I want you to move this pile of mulch to over beside the shed.” Trusting his son, he left him to his work.
The son looked from that dirty pile of mulch to his father’s bright blue truck. “It’s time for an oil change in Dad’s truck. Surely he’d rather I do that.” And off he went to change the oil, leaving the mulch pile untouched.
Soon the oil change was completed, but the son had found a whole list of jobs he could do to impress his father. The lawn got mowed, the ditches were trimmed, the truck was washed, and the shed was painted.
But the mulch pile still remained untouched.
Father came home and stared sadly at that brown pile of dirt and bark. That pile of disobedience.
All the good things the son did could not make up for neglecting to obey his father’s one simple, yet lowly, command.
What is my pile of mulch today?
How many good accomplishments do I pile at my Father’s feet, hoping He will overlook the commands He gave me in His Word?
The commands I did not obey.
Many spiritual leaders of today claim to have the key to a more “supernatural” experience with Christ. But perhaps they’ve overlooked some of the simple things that truly please Him.
Whatever happened to obedience?
If ye love Me, keep My commandments.
John 14:15
His Word says to love our enemies, but not many truly live that out. Everything within us wants to hate those who oppose us.
God tells us to forgive those who have wounded us. Yet complete churches are being divided down the middle over hearts that cannot forgive.
He said to be faithful in marriage, yet divorce is at staggering heights in the Church today.
Simple commands require simple obedience.
And this is love, that we walk after His commandments.
2 John 1:6
He wants an obedient child who will move His pile of mulch.
