The little boy asked to be read the Holy Scriptures – especially the passages about heaven. Because you see, cancer had riddled his small body. And he knew he was going Home where there was no pain, no tears, and no suffering. He was going Home without fear. All because the Bible told him so.
There was a little girl who, with tears streaming down her cheeks, asked Jesus to please forgive her for cheating. When the prayer ended, she lifted her head – believing her sins were forgiven. As far as the east is from the west. All because the Bible told her so.
The boys were in a debate over who could do the greatest things. Then one chimed in, “Well God can do anything!” And that ended the argument. All because the Bible told them so.
They don’t care about the color of skin. They know God made them all the same. Because the Bible tells them so.
Children know it’s wrong for a daddy to leave a mommy. Adults will find all kinds of loopholes in that command, but ask the children. They know it’s wrong. All because the Bible tells them so.
“And Jesus called a little child unto them, and set him in the midst of them, and said,
‘Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children,
ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.'”
Matthew 18:2-4
When did faith get so complicated?
We adults gloss over Matthew 18:2-4 in all our grown up ways. We make things so unnecessarily complicated, forgetting how simple faith in Jesus Christ really is. As simple as becoming like a little child.
A little child with all their trust in the most magnificent God! A little child who is willing to humble themselves enough to ask for help.
Since Jesus said He is coming again . . . the children will be watching.
When Genesis tells of God creating the universe . . . the children don’t consider any other option.
When the Bible commands us to pray for others . . . every night you’ll hear the children faithfully praying for those in chains.
What if most of the church’s problems would be solved if we’d model our faith after the children?
When God says to congregate ourselves together, we will find a church and faithfully support it.
When it speaks of forgiving a brother, we will forgive and forget instead of spreading slander about him.
When God commands women to cover their heads, we simply do just that.
When it says to be ready to speak the word in season and out of season, we obey – even if we feel inadequate to the task.
When God commands us to reprove, rebuke, and exhort, we pray for His strength to withstand the critics that come our way.
When the Bible clearly teaches that nothing shall put asunder a man and woman in marriage, we stand faithful to our spouse through thick and thin. All the way to the end.
Lowell and I have talked about this many times. This trend we see in those who are trying to skirt the truth. When you ask them to support their claim, it will take many, many words for them to come up with a good enough reason why. They will play ring-around-the-roundhouse with much intellectual talking and manipulative reasoning. It’s never a straight, Biblical answer.
How much easier is it when someone asks us a reason of the hope that is in us . . . and we have a simple answer? Such as . . . the Bible tells us so.
If the Bible says it, we believe it.
If the Bible commands it, we do our best to obey it.
If the Bible prophesies it, we look for it to happen.
In the end, it will be the simple faith that takes the hand. We can have the most flowery prayers, intellectual speeches, and best-sounding reasons. But if we cannot back up our claim by the Word of God . . . we hold a losing hand.
Let us be like little Wyatt who, during evening prayers, said the first thing that came to his heart: “I love you, Jesus God!”
There were no eloquent phrases, no flowery words, or a supernatural experience.
It was only a simple prayer
of a simple faith
in a mighty God.
