Why do we believe what we do?
Just because we’re told that’s the way it is? Or do we truly dive into the Scriptures to see what God says about it? Our children especially need to know the reasons for our beliefs.
As my bravery allows, I may touch on a few topics of “What I Believe and Why”. For now, I will share with you what I had to teach in the youth girl’s Sunday School class yesterday.
We are going through the book of Genesis and we found ourselves in the first chapter. I asked the class if they knew what the gap theory was, to which I received several blank looks. So I had to explain this way that some people think Creation happened.
According to my knowledge, the gap theory inserts millions or billions of years into the Biblical account of Creation. Thus the gaps. In my opinion, this is nothing more than Satan’s twisted version of the truth of God’s Word.
So I wanted to see how my girls could answer if I posed them this question:
“Pretend I come to you and tell you I believe in the gap theory. I want you to prove to me why it isn’t true.”
They started right in and soon had given me a good list of reasons to prove this theory was wrong. Here are four we came up with:
- Whenever you see the word “day” used in the Bible, along with a number, it always refers to a 24-hour day. Jonah wasn’t in the belly of the fish for 3 million years or Christ wasn’t in the tomb for 3 billion years. These were real days of 24 hours each.
- When the Scripture uses the words evening and morning, it means just that. A real day.
- If God had meant He created the world in 6 billion years instead of 6 days, couldn’t He have plainly told us this?
- To have gaps of millions of years between Creation days would have killed off life on this earth. Many plants are pollinated by birds and bees, but these things are separated in Creation by two whole days. Plants were made on Day 3 while birds and bees were made on Day 5. How could they have reproduced if there were millions or billions of years between the two?
This is my conclusion.
I believe God created the world just like He said. But the devil has gotten people to believe there was not a literal, 6-day creation. Why? If he can take the literalness out of the first chapter of the entire Bible, then he can take it out of the rest.
Why should people believe there is a literal Judgment Day coming or a literal hell when there was not a literal Creation?

Great post! I think what folks believe about creation is foundational to how they view God, the Creator. I’m glad you’re teaching these important truths to the young ladies in your church. I’m visiting late in the week from a Monday blog hop. Blessings!
