Since I have nothing better to do with my all my free time, I painted my kitchen cupboards.
Anybody notice anything wrong with that sentence? Exactly when does a mom get to the point of having nothing to do?! Oh well. It was fun typing out that sentence to see what it looked like anyway.
My kitchen.
You should google kitchen quotes sometime. They’re interesting. I will try to include a few as we go along.
I had been itching to paint these old cupboards for a long time. However, we are only renting this house and needed to get permission to do this project. Once they gave us permission, we dove into it headfirst to get it done quickly. I didn’t want this project strung out over a month, so we knocked it out somewhere around a week.
That week we ate lots of easy meals and junk food.
My two biggest boys were awesome at taking the cupboard doors off and then putting them back on when we were finished.
The old cupboards were varnished wood that had years of dirt and grime on them. The children helped me sand them before we could begin painting.
This little guy was my helper. Once the older children had left for school, we would begin prepping for our painting day.
A couple of the cupboards are free-standing and on rollers. So I would wheel these out in the middle of the kitchen and he would help paint the back sides of them with his little watercolor brush.
He loved it. Mom discreetly painted over it. But it made him feel big.
I had to do a coat of primer and a full coat of satin finish. Then on the fronts of all cabinets and doors, I did a third coat.
I consider myself an amateur painter. It’s actually my husband who is the pro at painting in our household. We had looked into the option of chalk paint, since that seems to adhere to varnished wood pretty good. But we wanted something more washable. So we went with 1-2-3 Bulls Eye primer and then Aquanamel Satin finish by Pratt & Lambert.
I love this new look.
When it was done, I hung up new burgundy curtains and would sometimes just stand there with a smile on my face. It suits me. It’s happy.

That is so beautiful!! For years I’ve daydreamed about painting my cupboards but I’m too afraid to start. My kitchen looks like your ‘before’ photo. You did such a great job!! Congratulations on a beautiful new kitchen!

I’d encourage you to do it! My thought was that if I am going to spend hours a day in my kitchen anyway, why should it not be pretty – especially in a frugal way? 😉 I am glad we did it!

My “before” was like yours and I painted them cream. We also ordered new Formica and my husband just glued it on to the old stuff. I love my bright kitchen!

That’s a really good idea for old countertops!
