Here is a little greenhouse update for you!
We started putting plants in the greenhouse a few weeks ago. Lowell had researched ways to heat a small greenhouse without breaking the bank . . . and one of the ways to help keep heat in is to put a pool cover on top. We use this cover to help heat the pool water in the summertime. When you have to fill a pool with mountain water, it is very cold to begin with!
So far, we have geraniums coming up very nicely. I am so excited to see these in a few months!
Marigolds and petunias are also coming up well.
I am starting most of my seeds in flat containers before transplanting them to plugs. However, my alyssum came in multi-seed pellets, so it got planted in plugs to begin with. For my containers, I cut off the tops of milk jugs and an ice cream bucket or two, and used the bottom filled with potting soil. It works splendidly! Just don’t forget to punch drain holes in the bottom.
We have a heater that runs on a timer through the night to keep it around 50 degrees inside the greenhouse. During the day, it stays pretty warm without any heat on at all.
However, I do start the seeds inside the house since it is more around 68 in there. Once the seeds germinate, we move them to the greenhouse.
This was another of Lowell’s great ideas to help with heat! He put cans of old, used oil down on the floor of the greenhouse. They heat up during the day from the sunlight and slowly release heat during the night.
This is my greenhouse journal. I am trying to keep track of when I start and transplant stuff so that I can look back next year for reference.
This little greenhouse is a source of relaxation for me! I love working out there while Dallas is taking his afternoon nap . . . especially now that Wyatt is off to kindergarten. I am so thankful for a husband who is incredibly good to me and knows how much this blesses my heart!

I love your greenhouse, it is amazing! I don’t have one as big as yours, I have an indoor greenhouse that my husband bought for me last year for Christmas. I haven’t started any seeds yet, but hope to do that this weekend. I love start flowers from seed, and may just do that, inspired by your lovely green heads popping out of the soil! I look forward to seeing how your greenhouse projects go… keep us updated! 🙂

This totally influenced me to buy a pack of marigold seeds and start some in front of our big picture window. It’s a good “experiment” for the kids, they’ve had fun watching them sprout 🙂 Your gardening endeavors are so inspiring! I’m anxious for spring, it’s been snowing most of the day where I am in rural Maine.

Oh I am sure your kids would love it!! Sorry to hear about your snow.
