For those of you who are curious how to make a double hairbun, I’ve managed to get my kiddos to take pictures of this early morning routine.
I begin by taking the end of a rattail comb (if that’s not a word, I’ll blame my mom – she always used it) and dividing the hair on the top and front of my head from the back. You will want to flop this top part forward to hang over your face while doing the back.
It’s just to get it out of the way and save it for later.
Next, I use the same comb to divide a patch of hair on the very center back of my head. Basically, just divide out a medium-sized square. Don’t go clear to the bottom of your hairline — you want this hanging down for now. It will cover your first bun.
Using that square of hair I just carved out, I make it into a bun. Yes, you will see that mine always tend to be on the left side. It’s a struggle for me to get it in the very center of my head. But once a veil is on, you can’t tell much difference.
Now I gather up the top, sides, and bottom to form a ponytail over the bun I just made. It will take lots of practice to learn to do this without making the underneath bun so big that you don’t have enough hair to then cover it.
This technique took me a while to get the hang of.
(The kids said this picture made me look really young!)
How nice.
Then I make a bun with the ponytail.
Add my veil and now I’m ready for coffee.
After I find my lovely spectacles……
I guess the kids will confirm that I’m now old again.

Thanks for the visual! I’ve always wondered how people do that! I’ve never figured it out, so always have a BIG bun. And now that I also wear a white veil, I like how my off centered bun isn’t as noticeable as in a netted covering. =]

So I’m not the only one who walks around with a lopsided head all day?! 😉

Lovely! I might try that. I mostly wear a flat bun now.

So your second bun goes directly on top of the first one? I see that you used pins on the first one, then do you use more pins on the second one? That seems like a lot of pins to me. Perhaps I’m just confused? The pictures are helpful, thanks. And by the way, you are far from the only one who walks around with a lopsided bun all day! I don’t think my bun has every been at the center of my head, so I’ve pretty much given up on it ever happening. At least yours is less visible than those of us with a see through covering. 🙂

Yes, I use pins in both of them. But you’d be surprised how few you need when your hair is divided in half. With only one bun, I used about 8-10 pins, and I probably use about 10 now. Of course, this would depend on the amount of hair you have.
Also, you can’t tell well from the pics, but the second (and visible) bun actually sits a little above the underneath bun. Helps it not stick out the back so badly!
This is definitely a trial and error thing — so have fun!! 😉

So then is the end result of a double bun smaller or flatter than a regular one? Or does it just look that way since you only see the one on top? I’m wondering if it would take up more, less, or the same amount of space in my covering.
Thanks for the demo!

I find it distributes the hair evenly, thus letting me keep it longer and thicker without giving me headaches as quickly. One bun used to give me a bigger lump sticking out farther. This makes it flatter, but maybe a little more space all over the back of your head.

Thank-you for sharing this, I often have ladies buy veilings in my store and ask questions about putting their hair up.
There are so few tutorials or instructions on how to do that. Could you post some different ways to put your hair up and then I could refer the to your blog?
Thanks for sharing on the veiling as well, God bless you for that.
I have read about the veiling at several blogs now including Anne Elliot’s blog and the Proverbs 31 wife.
Blessings to you!

I’ll have to see what I can do! Maybe I could take pics of some other lovely ladies at church who do their hair different ways. I might have to bribe them, though! 🙂

LOL, I can’t imagine the church ladies doing that, especially if they need to have their pictures on a blog!
But the truth is that there are women wishing for tutorials on putting their hair up, it is so hard if you have nobody to show you.
BTW, I pinned this article to my “head veiling” page and it has been repinned quite often!
