That dreaded disease has hit our little family again – chickenpox.
Our 9-year-old, Terrel, had shingles a few weeks ago and the nurse practitioner told me that it could cause chickenpox in the ones who hadn’t gotten them yet. Sure enough! Almost 2 weeks later, the two little ones broke out in red spots.
Look Mom! Something’s happening to my belly!
This was taken when they were only about 2 days into it. You can see they are still smiling! That would soon change.
This was taken by Day 5 and they were a couple of miserable little boys. Mommy was miserable along with them due to lack of sleep.
They had pox in their ears, mouths, possibly throats, in their hair, and even on their eyelids. The day after this looked even worse with more on their faces and around their mouths.
Logan especially complained of the pox hurting in his head/hair. There wasn’t much we could do for those, but we did come up with one remedy. We put a bag of frozen vegetables on his head! It helped to calm the itching and cool the pain and he begged for that bag of vegetables in the middle of the night even. He looked pretty funny – but it’s hard to laugh when they are so miserable!
We gave LOTS of baths! Balloons also make any illness better, especially when they can be used as rafts.
I added baking soda to almost every bath they took over the course of their chickenpox. Supposedly, it helps dry out the pox and help with skin irritation and itching.
They didn’t like when I added oatmeal to their baths, but it was supposed to help with itching, too. I would throw a little bit of oatmeal into my laundry bag.
Then zip it shut and throw it in the tub. Wyatt always wanted it to stay as far away from him as possible. Laundry bags have more than one use!
Big Sis helped entertain them on Sunday morning when Daddy and the big boys went to church. The occasion called for a tea party! At this time, the two sickies were still able to enjoy playing. Monday changed all that.
They broke out with chickenpox on Thursday and continued to break out with them until Tuesday. This was taken around day 5 and Logan kept saying he was so cold. He’d curl up right smack in front of the heater and it still didn’t do him much good.
We did lotsa lovin’ and spoilin’! I lost track of how many times we read the same three books over and over.
With sores all through their mouths and on their tongues, I had a hard time getting them to eat anything. Their diets for several days consisted of popsicles, ice cream, and milkshakes.
This little guy was tired and miserable. To help with the itching, I would give them some kind of cold/cough syrup with antihistamine in it at night. This helped them sleep for at least 2-3 hours. Calamine lotion also helped with the itching, although they yelled pretty good that it was “cold”. Nights were probably the worst because Mommy wanted to be sleeping, especially being almost 7 months pregnant. I found that Benadryl woke them them up, rather than put them to sleep.
Logan made a huge discovery while having the chickenpox – he loves Mom’s homemade chocolate milkshakes! A little bit of milk, ice cream, and chocolate syrup made this little boy happy.
I had him help me make this one, and then let him drink it straight from the blender. He was in his glory!

Poor boys! I remember when my three girls were little and had the chicken pox. They were so miserable too! Good luck!

Oh dear… this account makes me really dread when the pox comes to our house 🙁 None of our children have ever had it…

Seriously, Cara?! I remember Derek had it when he was around 1 – 1 1/2….figured Abby got it then too. Hopefully, though, yours won’t be as bad as this! This was a hard case and some children get by with only a few pox.

It’s better to have a lot of pox (miserable as that is) than to just have a few. One is more likely to get the pox again later and have a really bad case when it does come. This was the case with my youngest brother–he was absolutely miserable at 17 when he finally “got” them. The few he had at 4 just didn’t give the immunity needed.

None of ours have ever had it yet either, even tho they’ve been exposed a couple times. I was wishing they would get it so we could get it over with. If they don’t get it til they’re adults, oh boy, could be kinda bad! :/

When I was 5, I got chicken pox from a child at Awana. The next week all 4 of my brothers had it. I am sure that was a long 2 weeks for my mother! But at least it was all over and done with at once. If our children get it, I would want them to all have it, but I hope they don’t get it since my husband never had it and I don’t think he is too keen on gettting it at this point. 🙂

Naomi it might be a good idea to just get the vaccination for the pox, husband and children. It helps prevent shingles as well. I am NOT a vaccinating mommy but if my daughters fever right now doesn’t end up being the pox then I’m thinking my children just might have to go have a shot:-(Kendra those poor little guys look and sound so incredibly miserable! They are blessed to have a mommy that takes such good care if them and tries so hard to make the best of the worst:-) good job!

My boys had chicken pox at the exact same time. I’m so sorry.
