Lowell asked for a little girl with blue eyes and blonde curls.
He got her.
However, he should have ordered curls that don’t tangle!
After many tears, we have finally found a way to get the tangles out of this curly mass with a minimum amount of pain to both Megan and Mommy.
I researched the internet for a homemade detangler and found one that used water and hair conditioner . . . LOTS of conditioner. I tried that a while, but didn’t like the greasy feel of so much hair conditioner. It got all over my hands and the brush as I was combing her hair!
So in a bright moment . . . yes, I have those every decade or so . . . I decided to significantly reduce the ratio of conditioner to water. Since we already were using a water bottle to wet her hair, I thought, “Why not combine the two?”
This has worked great for us!
- All you need is: 1 empty spray bottle, water, 1 squirt of hair conditioner, 1 mass of tangles and a brush.
- Just fill your spray bottle about 3/4 full of tap water, add one squirt of hair conditioner and shake it well with the lid on. Use this in place of a water bottle when spraying curly tangles.
I like to spray it all over, underneath, in the middle and on top.
Then we begin combing out the tangles, starting at the bottom and working our way up.
Sometimes we hit more tangles underneath and inside the mass and need to give it another squirt or two.
Finally, we are getting somewhere.
And now it’s time to go to school.

We’ve done this! Also, have you tried the “wet brush” ? That brush has saved us many tears!
Living In The Shoe says
I haven’t! What is it?

It’s a little hard to explain, but the bristles have extra give to them, so when you hit a tangle it doesn’t pull as hard and doesn’t hurt as much.

So pretty! I love those curls!

I don’t have curly hair, or a daughter with curly hair, so I’m probably not qualified to offer advice or opinions. 🙂 However, a friend taught me to use coconut oil on my hair…simply massage it generously into the scalp 15 minutes or so before shampooing it. I am amazed at how much softer & silkier my hair is. I wonder if the same method would make curls easier to handle?
Kendra says
I’ve never heard that! Does it matter which kind of coconut oil? With that many curls, I’m willing to try it. I have both kinds of co on hand, but would rather use the cheaper if I could. 🙂 The shampoo doesn’t wash it out?

Im a mommy to 3 girls that have “tons” of THICK hair and I’ve found the brush makes a huge difference. I have a brush thats made by the old colony mennonites in mexico and believe me, while it looks homemade, i will never use anything else. It’s a miracle worker!
Kendra says
Glad to know you’ve found something to help you! I’ve often wondered how I’d manage with more than one girl. 🙂

I have VERY curly hair. I always comb when wet, because when it dries I can’t get a comb or brush through it.
Kendra says
Yes, we have found it is so much easier to comb it out when completely wet.

I use coconut oil for many many reasons on the hair the biggest being fine blonde curly hair! It detangles in an instant. I do however mix like you do with water in a spray bottle. I also however prefer the organic because it smells good (more like coconut) 😉 just my experience.
P.s.
Coconut oil is good for getting rid of cradle cap put on 15-20 minutes before bathing and when you wash the hair the cradle cap comes right off. Use it the same way for dandruff on bigger kids/adults.
As a conditioner you put it on after washing and rinse out.
Kendra says
Very interesting! So what do mix in the water bottle – water and coconut oil? My oil is solid so I’m curious what you put in there. I also would like the coconut smell in her hair!
Ann says
Two of my daughters and I totally understand tangly hair problems. I have also found it helpful to use coconut oil as it cuts down on the frizz and they are nice and soft. Like Joanna does, I massage it into hair and on scalp about 15-20 minutes before shampooing. It doesn’t matter the kind of coconut oil. I currently use a cheaper kind for my hair.
Kendra says
Great!! I might have to try this tomorrow. 🙂

I’m curious…what is a wet brush? I have a daughter with very tangly hair as well. Thanks for the tip for tangles! I’m anxious to try it!

I asked Abby that same question! 🙂 If you look at the replies under her comment, she left us a link.

I sit my coconut oil on the stove and the pilot lights melt/soften it. I also have just put a bit in the bottle and cover with really hot water to melt the coconut oil. I loved using this on my children’s hair when they were in public school also as it deters hair bugs because they cannot hold on 😉 my boys never got them not did their female friends whose parents used coconut oil and they did go around a few times.
Kendra says
I never knew that coconut oil could deter hair bugs!! That is awesome!

My girls are biracial and have super curly hair. Coconut oil is excellent for their hair and I like to use it on my own curly hair. But a little goes a long way so don’t overdo it!
Kendra says
Good to know! I tried it on Megan’s hair before we washed it Saturday evening. It made it soft and shiny, but the coconut smell got washed out. I was hoping it would stay in!
Denise says
If you mix the coconut oil in water and use after the coconut smell stays ;-). We always smell like we have been at the beach 🙂
Kendra says
I believe I am going to try this! I now have an extra bottle, so will have to mix this up for tomorrow. Thank you so much!
