Bear with me, for this is my heart opened up to you.
~~~~~~
The internet is a strange place. It allows an anonymity which real life does not give.
After posting several “controversial” (but needful) posts, I have found a wide variety of responses. Some of them have gladdened me. Many more have saddened me.
And most of them have come from women.
My question is this: Why is it that when someone questions our hero’s heroism, we react so strongly?
You might be surprised with a blog as little as this one, but I have received responses all the way from a genuine concern to . . . emails that read in all capital letters! And if you’re on the internet at all, you’ll know that’s the equivalent of someone yelling in your face.
This response I’ve not only seen in our circles today, but have been at the painful brunt of, has made my heart weep.
Not for myself, but for the precious name of Christ.
If only I could see that same fervor . . . when the world scoffs at the precious name of Jesus – not your favorite speaker.
If only I could see that same outrage . . . when the name of Jesus is cursed, slandered, and blasphemed.
Why can’t I see that same devotion to an author . . . applied to the Author of the Holy Word of God?
This post comes straight from my heart. And I truly am not angry at anyone.
I am weeping inside.
Weeping for the women who can’t abide anyone questioning their favorite Christian author . . . yet they rave about the current movie that appears good on the cover – but they fail to tell you about the homosexual scene inside it.
Where is the outrage then?!!
There is nothing but silence.
Oh how the heart of God must weep with all of our misplaced devotion and human loyalties that obscure the truth from our eyes. How sorry He must be at the state of our silent tongues and complacent attitudes toward outright sin in any form!!
If we are going to show any outrage, ladies, let us show it at the sin that has perverted and penetrated our minds, homes, and churches.
So how should a woman of God react upon having her hero questioned?
Let me tell you a true story. And again, bear with me since this will include my own experiences with my own little piece of the internet world. . .
I knew I’d have to post the article on “Jesus Calling” someday soon, but a wonderful woman in my life loved the book. And I couldn’t bring myself to post it. But finally, with enough encouragement from my husband, and with a little forewarning to this wonderful lady, I went ahead with it.[pullquote]Let us pause in all our human devotion and say, “Let me go back to the Word of God to see what it truly says.”[/pullquote]
And I prayed that God would send His Spirit out before it.
Three days later, I received a phone call. I picked up the phone, knowing it was her. But she was not angry. She was not railing at me for voicing my concerns.
Instead, she said this: “Thank you, for I have had my eyes opened.” And went on to inform me that she had had misgivings about this book six months prior. And she said it with more grace than I’ve heard in anyone thus far.
Do you want to know what I did? I got off the phone and let the tears flow. God had already been working months and months before. I felt so little that He had cared so long ago about this hurdle I would have to face. He had known how weak I would be when the moment came, and how much strength He would have to give me.
The mantra today is to have an open mind. This lady of grace had that open mind – one that was open to the truth, not to peer pressure or media hype. May we all be like her in her love for the truth.
So when we have one of our favorite people in life questioned as to being in line with Scripture, let’s be like this woman of grace. Let us pause in all our human devotion and say, “Let me go back to the Word of God to see what it truly says.”
As true women of God, let’s remember that our trust and devotion should be
in the Shepherd and Savior of our souls.
I agree. There are a lot of writers out there who write wonderful things but whose lives are far removed from the Biblical standard of a Holy Spirit filled life. God bless you for your courageous message.
Well written. May we all remember it is God’ Word that is our authority. Many times I have been thankful that you have had the courage to speak on things that may not be well received. You have done it gracefully too. It has been a rebuke to me as many times I have just chosen to be quiet because I “knew” something would not be well received by other Christians. It is a blessing to stop where truth is the goal. Have a blessed day!
How much I can identify! I am not always courageous to speak up when I should, and sometimes – while I’m trying to come up with a good way to say it – the subject gets changed. Sometimes I’m just plain scared. But it helps me to remember that there is truly only one person whose good opinion I wholly crave . . . and that is the Person of the Lord Jesus.
Thank you for being a blessing here today!
