One of our baby steps to healthier eating is making our own kefir. Lowell was the one who decided to do this, and who has kept it going and continues to grace our table with his creations.
He has kept at it, trying this and that, and perfecting his ingredients until he has it perfect!
I wanted to share his recipe with you since it is just that good!
If you are wondering what kefir is, how to make it, or where to buy your grains – the website Cultures For Health is a good place to start.
Some people can drink kefir straight – and Lowell probably could – but the rest of us have more sensitive tastebuds! This recipe I will share with you is one that we can all drink, even down to Baby Dallas. It is more like a smoothie and is delicious! Our favorite flavors include strawberry and blueberry/peach.
*Note = Lowell adds in powdered vitamin C simply as a way to get more vitamin C into our diet, especially in the wintertime. You can’t even tell it’s in there since the twang of the kefir masks the vitamin C flavor.

I’d love to try it sometime.

If I like it, you’d like it!
Joe Ada Mae Shetler says
You go! Have you tried the 2nd fermentation? That basically takes care of any tart taste. The health benefits are big, no more heartburn for my hubby. PTL!
Living In The Shoe says
Not sure what that is. Can you describe it?
Joe Ada Mae Shetler says
After you take the kefir grains out, you can put a fruit ( we like bananas ) into the kefir and let it set at room temp for several hours. The kefir will eat the naturally occurring sugar of the fruit and it will give it a much milder taste yet. Kefir smoothies can be very delish with different fruits and even coconut oil. You can also find info online.

Thanks!!

So you start with store bought kefire n add the other ingredients?
Joe Ada Mae Shetler says
You have to use kefir grains to make this. She has a link on her blog page where you can buy these. If you were close by I would gladly share some of mine. 🙂

We just started using kefir and are really excited!!! Thanks for the post!!!! My husband drinks it straight. But like you said, not many will. 🙂 One of my friends told me about your blog.
Brenda Wenger says
Oh and I wanted to say, I was not able to drink very much at first. Did you find it that way too?
Kendra says
Yes, I did. It had an odd taste at first that is completely gone now and we love it!!
Living In The Shoe says
Janet, what she said ^^!
Mar-Jan Bender says
Gotcha! Thanks 🙂
Joe Ada Mae Shetler says
Oh and the grains can be used over and over and over and they multiply like bunnies. 🙂
