Can you ever take a trip where you are completely and totally prepared? It seems like we can’t. But thankfully we did all remember our toothbrushes and deodorants.
But Megan and I found out soon after arriving there and amid strong winds, that our normal veils weren’t going to be real practical at the beach. Between us we had only one scarf and so we hit the dollar store to find Megan a scarf to wear while we were beaching it!
I told her she looks like a beautiful gypsy.
This picture is an interesting one. I didn’t even notice until Logan pointed it out – that it looks like he is about to spear Terrel with the shovel he is holding in the left hand corner of the picture! Those two had grabbed a couple of big shovels from the house and were endeavouring to dig a great big hole in the beach.
Lowell had jumped in the ocean with the boys and they loved it! But I wasn’t nearly hot enough to put my body into the freezing cold Pacific.
Digging to catch sight of China is hard work.
This was our masterpiece this year. The children helped me and we had so much fun putting this little village together!
Our town even had its own church and cemetery, plus a river with a couple bridges.
A couple of the town houses. I had fun finding the rocks for the road.
This was Logan’s garden. He did such a good job!
The next morning we went to some more tide pools and found some actual real live sea stars!
In case you missed it in the first post, these are the two tide pool books we purchased to take with us and highly recommend:
- Pacific Intertidal Life: A Guide to Organisms of Rocky Reefs and Tide Pools of the Pacific Coast
- Fylling’s Illustrated Guide to Pacific Coast Tide Pools
Heceta Head Lighthouse.
Our family with the fly-away hairdos.
We took lots and lots of walks on the beach.
This was an awesome natural jungle gym! At high tide, the water would swirl up around this dead tree and the children had fun trying to jump up out of the way of the waves.
I decided it was a good place to snap some pictures.
On this trip, I tried to play around with the manual setting on my camera to get as much color in the picture as possible.
The vivid blue of the sky in these pictures still amazes me!! It was the most sunny, beautiful day we had there.
It’s crazy how the horizon can get all slanted on you . . . when you are focusing on something else.
I tried consoling myself with the quote that says you are a good teacher if your students pass you up. Because I done got whipped real good in Dutch Blitz.
Growing up, I had so many good memories of Dutch Blitz. So when the children began to catch on to this multitasking game, we had an absolute blast! Although, we played so loudly Dad had to leave the room in order to get a nap in.
One more walk before we must head home to real life and smoky mountains.
Yet our memories of the mighty Pacific will go with us throughout the rest of our lives!

Such lovely pictures. I always see Dutch Blitz in the GVS catalog and it looks it interesting. So how is it played? Our family is starting to play games again together and this one might be fun.

It’s hard to describe on here! But here is a video that might help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oz81zltG6E

I’ll check it out. I love how children will climb on things with their barefeet! That’s my favorite picture. They are so brave. Not me! I’m a big chicken. Do you hear me clucking?
Kendra says
😉 Yep, it’s fun to watch our children use their bodies in the way God intended it – for running, jumping, climbing and having a good time outdoors!

I loved reading about your vacation! The sand crabs, tide pools and sand ‘castle’ villages! Those were very impressive! I was born and raised in San Diego and this brought back so many memories. Now I’m in Seattle and the ocean is a 3-4 hour drive from here. Even still, we try to make it out there at least once a year. I’m glad you all had a fun, relaxing vacation.

We took the family to Seattle one time long ago and I would like to go back. Someone said the aquarium there in Seattle is really good!

This was a lovely two-part post! Thank you for sharing your wonderful trip with us! This was a big encouragement to me, as well. I absolutely despise planning vacations (and I’m not too fond of vacations in and of themselves), and I don’t tend to do it nearly as often as I ought. But as you say, time spent together as a family is so precious – and things experienced as children are forever precious. Thank you for the encouragement in the right direction!
I first thought you were talking about Newport Beach in SoCal, and was super-excited that such a beautiful area might be accessible to us down in the south. Then I realized you were talking about Oregon, LOL!!

😉 Yeah, that’s quite a ways from SC!! Even then, if you ever get out this way, make sure you at least see the West Coast. It’s beautiful!
