Let me introduce you to our HUGE project this summer! This is a family project and one we are enjoying as the summer goes on.
In the spring, we purchased a 1-acre lot down the road in a subdivision outside of town. We had plans to build a spec home on it and sell it this summer. Another thing that happened this spring is that the house we are renting sold – yet we were graciously given until October to live in it. So this spec home was going to be our fallback option if nothing else became available for us by October.
However, those plans have changed.
I will try to walk you through the pictures, but please remember I am no general contractor! I just feed the construction crew . . .
Here they are working on the foundation. Lowell takes the three older boys to the site with him each day. Wyatt, who is 9 years old, will sometimes go when they need a person to sweep, or get them their tools.
The walls are going up here! It’s funny, but when there is only a foundation, my woman brain doesn’t think the house is very big at all. And then the walls go up and I realize it’s getting bigger on me!
When Grandpa and Grandma Wray were in Israel last year, they bought Jerusalem billcaps for each of the grand boys. They are getting put to much use this summer!!
The boss. I like him.
Now it’s the exciting day when the trusses come!
Gulp. With the roof on, that house just turned HUGE. How could I think it was little?
It was somewhere around this point that a couple realtors pulled in the drive. Now remember we were not going to actively try selling it until it was nearly completed. But they asked if Lowell had time for a couple questions.
Turns out that they had a family who had been looking for a house since April and they thought this might be the one for them. Within five days, a purchase agreement was signed!
This totally blew us away. How could our house sell when we were not trying and without any promoting on our part? All we can say is that we had not a single hand in the sale of this house. God is a great realtor.
All through this spring and summer, knowing we have to find a place to go this fall, an incredible peace has surrounded us. We simply know God will provide something – even if it isn’t grand – He will still provide for us. This was just another confirmation that He is supplying our needs.
This is the back of the house as they were beginning to put up the shingles.
And some of the good-looking crew.
I like them, too.
As I was uploading these pictures, I realized I don’t have a full house picture with all the shingles on the roof. It makes it look even bigger still. Perhaps I will have that when I update on it next.
Insulation time.
We needed some cute people in this picture.
And the boss thought I should try my hand at insulating. They should have pink insulation. Then it would look more like cotton candy!
So there you have our family project for the summer. It’s taking all of us to get it done! With Lowell doing construction, he is subbing out his mail route more. We hired a new young man from church who is doing great, as well as hiring our normal sub. I also do mail 1-2 days a week. On these days, Megan gets to be me and take care of home projects.
Since this house is only a mile away, the guys all come home for lunch almost every day. I have enjoyed this! It’s giving us lots of time together before they all leave me this fall and head to work and school. I’m trying to soak it up . . . even on the days I do get tired of setting the table 3 times a day.
Megan has done great on the days I am doing mail. I think it helps when Mom is not there to tell her how to do it!
Hopefully we can get you more pictures as the house progresses. We are aiming to have it done around the first of September. And from here on out is where the really fun and pretty stuff begins to take shape!

Yes, they are definitely learning so much! I am glad Lowell can do this with them before they all leave home.
